Designers From Season 2 of 'Rock the Block' Reveal What Happened Behind the Scenes

The eight designers got together for a virtual Q&A event to reveal their favorite moments and spaces from the competition show.

March 05, 2021

Ahead of the premiere of Season 2 of Rock the Block, HGTV hosted a Rock the Block virtual press Q&A to get writers, editors and, as a result, readers and viewers, excited for the upcoming season. As in the show, Ty Pennington hosted the Q&A, in which all four teams—David Bromstad and Tiffany Brooks, Mike Holmes and Alison Victoria, Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, and Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt—were in attendance.

While neither Ty nor any of the other designers was permitted to give away details of the show, they were able to speak about what the cameras didn’t show and what their favorite rooms in their respective projects were, as well as which designer each of them would want to design their own home.

“I wish that we had cameras on us—by the way, when I say this, I really don’t wish this, because it just gives me anxiety—but I wish they had cameras on us 24/7,” Alison shared. “I wish that they could see, I mean, this season, it was really raw and it was a lot of emotions and it was a lot of real anger and stress and happiness and camaraderie and friendships. So I feel like that’s what I wish, but I do think you’re going to get a bigger taste of it this season than you ever got Season 1. So for that, I’m grateful.”

In terms of the designers’ favorite spaces within the fully finished homes, the general response focused on the kitchen, which Nate and Jeremiah refer to as the “heartbeat of the home.” That said, Brian and Mika were the biggest fans of their basement, as it was a completely raw space to which they could give new purpose.

As different as everyone’s design styles are, most of the designers agreed that if they could have anyone design their home, Alison would likely be the winner, thanks to her ability to seamlessly blend the old with the new. Of course, most of them also agreed that, given the choice, they’d like a combination of a few different design styles to add extra intrigue to their home. Ty, in particular, wished that he could have each room in his home designed by a different designer. After all, he “loves chaos.”

Despite all the camaraderie, the fun that was had, and the praise for each other’s styles, designers overwhelmingly said that this project was one of the most challenging they had ever embarked on and that they hope to never do it again. Of course, as a two-timer now, Alison assured them that, once upon a time, she said the same thing.

Tune into the Season 2 premiere of Rock the Block on Monday, March 8, at 9 p.m. ET on HGTV and Discovery+.
